March 2014 Prayer Letter

March 31, 2014

Dear family, friends, and faithful ministry partners,

I want to start out by saying how grateful we are to each of you that have a part in our ministry here in São Paulo, Brazil.  We stay busy in the work, and as with any ministry, we have our share of struggles, but the blessings far outweigh the difficulties.

I want to emphasize a few of our highlights we have had in recent months.  Some of you are aware of a few of the things I will relate, but not everyone has received news of the latest happenings.

In November, Dan baptized three deaf people, and the Lord blessed with a good number of people coming to witness this event in the lives of these people.  We also celebrated the 19th anniversary of the Igreja Batista da Bíblia (Bible Baptist Church), and we trust the Lord to continue to bless the church with spiritual and numerical growth for the future.

In December we had our Christmas Banquet, and we had a good number of people for that big event.  On December 23, Dan & Becky celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary.  Almost fifteen of those years have been spent in Brazil.  We also had our first Deaf camp on December 26 through 28.  We had a great time as we emphasized the Christian Family.

We began a New Member’s Class the last week of January, which usually goes for about eight to ten weeks.  There are two elderly ladies in the class.  One of the ladies cannot read or write, and that makes it a little more challenging as Dan teaches her the very basics of the Christian life.  She has been very faithful, and is excited about being baptized and becoming a church member.  The other lady has about a second-grade reading level, and has a little higher level of understanding, but even the most basic things are completely new to these ladies.  We will soon be having another baptism in the near future for these two ladies.

In February we had deaf BIMI missionary, Bruce Kelly, with us for a special Sunday.  We had a wonderful day, and the deaf of our church warmly welcomed Bro. Kelly, his wife, and son.  There were 87 in attendance, and we praise the Lord for the opportunity to meet some new deaf people.

We are seeing more visitors, as well as, having some others return that come from long distances, but have not been very faithful.  The situations are different, from a backslidden husband, to health and financial reasons, and another just because of the time involved in getting to church.  We are encouraged that these are putting forth an extra effort to get back in church.  One deaf lady told us that she was going to a church that was closer to her home, but that she was not learning anything.  God is blessing, and for that we surely praise His name!

We count it and honor and a privileged to represent you in Brazil.  As you keep shining the Light in your “Jerusalem,” we will continue to shine the Light in the “uttermost part of the earth.”

That all may “hear,”

Dan & Becky Bennett

June 2013 Prayer Letter

June 26, 2013

Dear partners and friends of the ministry,

Isaiah 41:10 says, “Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.”  This verse has helped me recently as we have had many different physical, emotional, and ministerial changes in the past several weeks.

In March, we returned to the States for thirteen weeks for various reasons.  The main reason was that our children, Nathan and Anna, would be graduating from high school through the A Beka Academy home-school program.  There was a good number of graduating home-schoolers from around the world that descended upon Pensacola, Florida for those two days, and we congratulate our children for their hard work and accomplishment.

Second, we were also in a number of new churches to present our ministry, and to try and raise some additional needed support.  We are grateful that three churches took us on for financial support in South Carolina, Texas, and Iowa.

Finally, since this would be the first time for Nathan and Anna to be out “on their own”, we felt it necessary to be with them in this transitional phase of their lives as they said goodbye to the family.  All four of our oldest children are involved in summer ministry at the present time.  Joseph (age 20) is traveling with Neighborhood Bible Time, a good organization with which I served when I was in Bible college.  Rachel (age 22) and Anna (age 17) are serving with a Summer Jewish Ministry Outreach in Miami, FL, and Nathan (age 18) is doing the same thing in Downer’s Grove, IL.  Leaving four of our children in the States was a very difficult thing to do, but we praise the Lord that they are serving Him, and they have a heart for ministry.

On June 21 we returned to Brazil with our three youngest children.  We were anxious to get back here and back into the ministry.  On June 23, our very first Sunday back, the Brazilian pastor informed the church that he is leaving the ministry, and will no longer be pastor of the church.  It took a while for this announcement to sink in since he has been there for 17 years.  He said that Pastor Daniel (me) would stay there to continue the work.  While we knew this was coming, we didn’t expect it to be so soon.  Over the years, there has been a dramatic decline in the attendance, and I would like to see an increase in the church again, as a thriving, growing church.

We appreciate so much our faithful prayer and financial supporters.  While we are thankful for the three new churches that took us on for support, we don’t take for granted those of you that have stood with us through “thick and thin” over many years of ministry.  You all are a vital part of our ministry, and we know that we would not be in Brazil without you.  The harvest is plenteous, but the laborers are few here in Brazil.  Keep praying that we could see more fruit harvested for our Lord, and fruit that may abound to your account.

That all may hear,

Dan & Becky Bennett

February Prayer Letter

Dear faithful ministry partners,

Let me begin by saying how grateful to God we are for each and every one of you that have an integral part in our ministry.  Thank you for “holding the ropes” so firmly and faithfully!  We do not take you, or what you do for us for granted.

As the first month of 2013 is already history, we thank the Lord for what He has done, and we look forward to seeing what He will do in the remaining eleven months of this year.

Regarding the church property, some time ago, an elderly deaf couple passed away and left a portion of their “estate” to the deaf church.  After being tied up in legal matters, their property is now free to be sold.  Please pray that it will sell quickly.  We don’t know for how much it will be sold, but the sale of this property should help with the initial cost of getting started on the construction of a building.  Read more

October 2012 Prayer Letter

Dear partners in ministry,

What a privilege it is to serve the Lord! Let us never forget that Jesus is coming again, and it may very well be soon!

In our last letter, we mentioned the donation of property by another church to the church in which we are now serving. The church that donated the property had to formulate a legal document, stating that they were, indeed, donating the property. When the document was taken to a notary’s office to be legalized, there was something that the notary noticed that was done in error. As a result, the document was not notarized, and the land donation has not been officially transferred over yet. It’s a lot of “red tape,” but we are not discouraged by this delay, believing that God has something great in store for this area called, “Guacuri.” Read more

Prayer Letter 5/31/12

May 31, 2012

Dear co-labourers in the ministry,

Thank you for your continued prayers and support. We truly count it an honor to be able to represent your church in Brazil.
For those of you that were praying for us as we were looking for a vehicle, we appreciate your prayers. The Lord provided the money for us to get a twelve-passenger van in good condition. We bought it from an individual, and we had it checked by a deisel mechanic to make sure the engine was fine, and also a mechanic that specializes in transmissions, and everything checked out great. However, just a month after we bought the van, we were moving to our present location when the water pump went out. I pulled off the road when I heard the engine noise just as soon as I could, but the damage was done. The motor was blown and had to be rebuilt. We were without a vehicle for a month while the work was being done, and so we took the bus back and forth to church. We now have the van in our possession, and we hope and pray that we will not have any more problems with the van for a very long time.
In the deaf church, I am getting more opportunities to preach, and therefore my sign language is gradually improving – thank the Lord! The church has struggled in recent years as a good number have left the church, and some have even been telling other deaf that the church had closed. We are praying that the current members would stay faithful, and also that we would be able to reach more deaf with the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
We mentioned in our last letter about some exciting news regarding the deaf church. The news is that the Bible Baptist Church in São Paulo has received a Read more

February Prayer Letter

February 8, 2012

Dear partners in the ministry,

But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint. Isaiah 40:31. We praise the Lord for the privilege to serve the Lord in Brazil. Sometimes we do get weary, and sometimes we feel faint, but we are thankful for the renewed strength that the Lord has given to us.

We returned to Brazil for our third term on December 6, 2011. We have been back for two months now, and we are somewhat settled in temporary housing. Some dear, long-time missionary friends of ours, Terry and Wendy Broyles, have bent over backwards to help us in this transitional time of getting re-adjusted to the Brazilian culture, something that has been especially important for our younger children. They have an apartment on their church property that they have graciously offered for us to use at a very low rental cost, and have also loaned us their car while we search for a vehicle.

We were privileged to have Rachel and Joseph, our two oldest children, here with us in Brazil for Christmas. They have finished their first semester at West Coast Baptist College, and are already back in Lancaster, California, for their second semester. They love it there, and we were thrilled to see and hear what God is doing in their lives already just after one semester. With two in college, we all would appreciate your prayers for them as we are so very far apart, and we cannot just hop in the car and be there in a couple of hours. Please pray with us regarding their school bills, as well. Read more

October Prayer Letter

Dear Faithful Partners in Prayer and Support,
We want to express our heartfelt gratitude to you for your faithfulness to God, to us, and to our ministry.
In 1994, God called Becky and me to be missionaries to the deaf in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Sao Paulo, a city of 23 million people, has between 45,000 – 80,000 Deaf! In our first term, we had the privilege of working with Dan’s brother in the Bible Baptist Church for the Deaf of São Paulo. God raised this church up to be a Gospel Lighthouse to the deaf in that region.
God brought to the deaf church a few hearing families from a neighboring city. Although it was not our original intention, God led us to start a hearing church in Osasco during our second term. On October 1, 2004, the Bible Baptist Church in Osasco held her first service. We saw souls saved, people baptized and discipled, and we even began to support five missionary families through Faith Promise giving. We praise the Lord for using us to start a fundamental Baptist church in Osasco.

From the beginning, our goal and prayer was to turn the church over to a national pastor. After we had started the congregation in Osasco, we noticed another fundamental Baptist, national pastor, Pastor Eutálio, also pastoring a work nearby. In God’s wisdom and goodness, He has led us to join our two churches together under Pastor Eutálio. This pastor, married with two grown children, has fourteen years of ministry experience. He said he was humbled, yet excited about serving our church people as well.

December 2009 News Letter

December 28, 2009

Dear Praying Friends,

We greet you in the precious name of our wonderful Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Not only that, but we greet you from our home church, the Southside Baptist Church in Rock Hill, South Carolina. Yes, we are back in the United States for our furlough. After five and a half years we have made it back to the States for a much needed furlough. On Sunday night, December 6, we had our farewell service. It was encouraging to see a good number of people there to send us off. There were people there that we have led to the Lord since the church was started, people whom we have discipled, baptized, and are now faithful church members to this day. We also had people there that we have worked with over the years, but have not yet trusted the Lord as their personal Savior. While we rejoice to see what God has done in Osasco, we still know that the work is not done, and it was tough to leave the people with whom we have worked and grown to love. There was a going-away party for us after the service, and many tears were shed as we said our good-byes. We left Brazil on Tuesday night, December 8, arriving on Wednesday the 9th.

July 2009 Prayer Letter

Dear co-laborers in the ministry,

“Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.” Prov. 3:5

We praise the Lord that He is trustworthy and omniscient, and we don’t have to depend upon our own weak, finite understanding. God’s ways are not our ways, but His ways are always best, no matter how, or when, or where they may lead.

We had our annual Faith Promise Missions Conference in April, and we praise God that we were able to increase the support of the five missionary families we now support.

As you may remember, we had Vacation Bible School in January when we had our first deaf person come to church from the neighborhood. As a result, we began our deaf ministry. On Sunday morning, April 26, Becky had the joy of leading Cristiane, a deaf lady, to the Lord. Becky has begun to disciple her, and it is so refreshing to see her desire to learn and grow spiritually. Read more
